Historic
Cavalier Hotel

About this Project

The historic and grand Cavalier Hotel, Virginia Beach, VA, is one of our most outstanding projects. As a skylight renovation company, Crystal Structures was excited to be a part of restoring this hotel to its original grandeur. The difference between before and after photos is unmistakable. The renovation revived the grand “first impression” of the indoor swimming pool and built a skylight that lets in just the right amount of light while keeping the inside environment comfortable for swimming or lounging.

The 7-story hotel Cavalier Hotel was built in 1927 in a Y shape. The hotel was ahead of its time featuring dining facilities and shopping, as well as swimming pools, all of which are now common features of modern hotels. The Virginia Beach hotel has a rich history including playing host to seven US Presidents and many, many movie stars.

In 2014 the hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places, protecting the building from being torn down. But over time, the hotel and the skylight were in desperate need of renovation. An $85 million renovation project was completed in March 2018.

The hotel swimming pool was originally topped with a 57’ x 30’ skylight that allowed sunlight to bathe the pool in warmth during the day and gave a starry night view in the evenings.

Over time, the skylight became more of a headache. Crystal Structures installed a new skylight over the swimming pool area as part of the hotel renovation project.
The hotel, now part of the Marriott Autograph collection of properties has won eight awards for the overall renovation project including:

The Cavalier Hotel has most recently received a Stella Award from the Northstar Meetings Group for Best Hotel Renovation in the Northeast Region. Competing with over 500 properties from across the country, the award spotlights the nation’s best hotels along with noteworthy travel industry organizations and businesses.

The Cavalier was also chosen from qualifying projects located throughout the Mid-Atlantic region to receive an Award of Merit for Renovation/Restoration from ENR Mid-Atlantic Magazine.
