Johnson County Courthouse

About this Project

The Johnson County Courthouse, originally built in 1891, underwent a major renovation and expansion project that was completed in 2021. The new courthouse, designed by Traenor HL and Fentress Architects, features a unique biophilic design that blends with the surrounding environment and brings nature to the people inside.

One of the most striking features of the new courthouse is the expansive skylight that stretches almost the full length of a football field. Manufactured and installed by Crystal Structures, the 11′ x 270′ skylight comprises 55 bays and provides natural daylight to the atrium and second-floor hallway. To put the size of the skylight into perspective, a football field measures 360 feet in length, making the skylight nearly 75% as long as a football field.

The skylight offers more than just lighting; it allows natural patterns and shadows to form as the sun moves through the sky. This movement generates eye appeal and provides well-being for those within the space by fulfilling the basic need to be in touch with nature.

The installation of the skylight by Crystal Structures was a crucial aspect of the courthouse’s design, enhancing the biophilic effect and creating a more pleasant environment for visitors and staff alike. The natural daylight provided by the skylight contributes to the overall ambiance of the space, making it feel more open, welcoming, and connected to the outdoors.

The Crystal Structures skylight is a testament to the importance of incorporating natural elements in modern architecture, particularly in public buildings where people spend significant amounts of time. By prioritizing the integration of daylight and views of the sky, the Johnson County Courthouse has set a new standard for courthouse design and construction.

Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe expressed his excitement about the new facility, stating, “Some 400 thousand people a year are going to that building … This building will bring it to a new level and allow us to get our job done and help the people of Johnson County, so we’re excited about it.” He also added, “This facility will be able to serve the people at Johnson County for the next 75 years.”
