Skylights with Clerestories Illuminate Stickney Water Reclamation Plant

As part of a renovation project at the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant (SWRP), the largest wastewater treatment facility in the world, Crystal Structures installed 6 impressive skylights with clerestories. These skylights not only provide natural light to the reclamation center but also assist in the water purification process.

The skylights, measuring approximately 60′ x 40′, sit atop vertical windows, also known as clerestories, which extend the skylight upward. These clerestories are 18″ tall x 36″ across and are positioned well above the sight line, providing an additional lighting surface.

The natural light provided by the skylights and clerestories offers several benefits to the reclamation center. Firstly, it creates a more comfortable environment for visitors and staff, reducing eye strain when looking across the water. Secondly, sunlight has a purifying quality that can assist in the water purification process.

The combination of skylights and clerestories allows for easy observation of the water treatment area below. The natural light floods the space, making it easier to monitor the water and the purification process.

While Crystal Structures has manufactured similar skylights with verticals for other purposes, such as the Bay City Hall renovation and the skylight atop the Chappy mall, the industrial application at the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant is truly unique.
